The International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) has announced the results of its 2020 research projects. After expert review and programme evaluation, a total of six projects have been approved for this year. The project, entitled International Experience in Establishing a Long-term Mechanism to Address Relative Poverty, submitted by Professor Wu Haitao, Director of the IIDPF Poverty Research Centre was well awarded. The experts who were also approved for the project include IIDPF's distinguished alumnus of the 1979 agricultural economics and management programme, renowned economist Professor Hu Biliang.
In the context of focusing on relative poverty in China's poverty governance, the approved project will systematically review the international experience of relative poverty governance in terms of relative poverty identification, participation of micro-level subjects, governance of grassroots organisations and macro-level poverty reduction policy design, summarise the regional characteristics and practical effects of international relative poverty, and develop concrete cases to summarise the international experience in building a long-term mechanism to address relative poverty, and to contribute to the establishment of a long-term mechanism for poverty reduction in various countries. It also contributes Chinese wisdom to the establishment of long-term mechanisms for poverty reduction in various countries.
IPRCC is an international poverty alleviation agency directly under the State Council's Poverty Alleviation Office, jointly initiated and established by the Chinese government and international organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme. The main responsibilities of the IPRCC include poverty reduction research, exchange, cooperation, training and foreign investment project management at home and abroad, and is an international platform in the field of poverty reduction and development and an important channel for the Chinese government to carry out South-South cooperation. Since the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee, poverty alleviation and development work will gradually shift from solving the problem of absolute poverty to focusing on solving the problem of relative poverty, and "building a long-term mechanism for solving relative poverty" will be the focus of China's future poverty alleviation research. The awarding of this project after a fierce competition is another breakthrough of IIDPF's research in the field of poverty in China, following the major project of the National Social Science Foundation "Research on Multidimensional Identification and Collaborative Governance of Relative Poverty in China". It demonstrates the overall strength and competitiveness of the research team and further enhances the professional reputation and social recognition of ZUEL's agricultural and economic discipline.
