The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 has made us realise the importance of urban emergency management systems and the urgency of building resilient cities. Commissioned by the Wuhan Municipal Government Advisory Committee, ZUEL established the Improving Wuhan's Urban Risk Resilience and Building a Resilient City working group. After nearly four months of research visits and team research discussions, the research report has been tentatively completed.
On the morning of 22 October 2020, the final report workshop of "Improving Wuhan's Urban Risk Resilience and Building a Resilient City" was successfully held at the IIDPF meeting room. professor yang canming, president of ZUEL and dean of IIDPF, professor Lu Yuanping, executive vice dean of IIDPF, and researchers professor Shi Zhilai, professor Wu Lei, associate Professor Tian Binbin, Dr Xie Bingqing and Dr Liu Erpeng attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by professor Lu Yuanping. The meeting featured a full discussion on Improving Wuhan's Urban Risk Resilience and Building a Resilient City.
At the beginning of the meeting, Professor Lu Yuanping introduced the basic work of the group since its establishment. Dr. Liu Erpeng, who was in charge of the overall report, gave a presentation on the overall content of the report. The faculty members involved in writing the report then gave detailed presentations on the parts they were responsible for.
Professor Yang Canming firstly expressed his gratitude to all the faculty members of the subject group for their hard work and affirmed the work of the subject group in the past four months. In his speech, Professor Yang provided guidance on the content of the report. Professor Yang pointed out that the ultimate aim of writing the report is to improve Wuhan's urban resilience and reduce urban vulnerability, therefore the report as a whole must focus on the operability of the final response. In the meantime, social sources are crucial in the face of natural disasters, and the issue of social resource mobilisation and system construction should be given attention.
The project was well supported by the University leadership and faculty members. To better complete the task given to the University by the Wuhan Municipal Government Advisory Committee, members of the subject group have made several field research visits to relevant government departments in Wuhan, went to Hangzhou to study and research the advanced experience in the construction of resilient cities, and held several internal thematic seminars. Finally, with the joint efforts of all members of the group, a research system of "1+1+6" was formed.
