On 25th May 2021, the 1st Xixian-Luoyu City Forum of Financial Studies was successfully held at School of Public Finance and Taxation, ZUEL. The forum was co-organised by the School of Public Finance and Taxation of ZUEL, IIDPF of ZUEL, the Department of Finance and Taxation of Wuhan University, the Department of Finance and Financial Management of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the School of Finance and Public Administration of Hubei University of Economics, and the School of Economics of Wuhan Textile University. Experts, young scholars and representatives of postgraduate students from five universities and related research institutions attended the forum. The forum was chaired by IIDPF researcher, Associate Professor Tian Binbin.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Zhang Kezhong, Dean of the School of Public Finance and Taxation and Vice Director of IIDPF, ZUEL, expressed a warm welcome to the arrival of experts and scholars in his speech. He stressed that the forum aimed to enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation, build a platform for crosstown exchange in finance disciplines and promote "first-class" output.
Professor Gong Feng, Director of the Department of Finance and Taxation, Wuhan University, Professor Chen Pinglu, Director of the Department of Finance and Financial Management, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Tao Dongjie, Director of the Department of Finance, Hubei University of Economics, and Professor Zhou Jing, Director of the Department of Finance and Taxation, Wuhan Textile University, delivered keynote speeches. Professor Gong Feng expressed that the forum was built with academic exchange in mind, hoping that it could become a platform for academic exchange and scholarly cooperation, and a platform for the construction and collaborative development of finance. Professor Chen Pinglu expressed his hope that young scholars have become the mainstay of the research and construction of the finance discipline, and that this platform can be used to promote in-depth exchanges and produce landmark results in the finance community in Wuhan. Professor Tao Dongjie gave full recognition to the establishment of the forum and hoped that the forum would give full play to its role in promoting the construction of finance disciplines in Wuhan's higher education institutions. Professor Zhou Jing believes that this forum is conducive to promoting the development of the discipline and the output of innovative results, and hopes that there will be more exchanges with the five brother institutions to make progress together and collaboratively promote the construction and development of the finance discipline.
The paper presentation session was chaired by Professor Gong Feng of Wuhan University. Dr. Lu Shengfeng from Wuhan University gave a presentation entitled "The "Political Premium" Effect of Land: Evidence from the Relocation of Chinese Government Residences". Dr. Ma Zizhen from Wuhan University gave a presentation entitled "All-pay Campaign and Electoral Accountability". Dr. Zhao Kui from Huazhong University of Science and Technology gave a presentation entitled "From Coast to Inland: The Westward Movement of Capital under the Opening of the China-European Railway Express". Dr. Jun Cai from Huazhong University of Science and Technology gave a presentation entitled "The Value of Mandatory Audit: Causal Evidence from Nonprofits". Dr. Wan Qian of IIDPF gave a presentation entitled "Social Networks and Human Capital Investment - A Study Based on Chinese Clan Organizations”. Dr Chen Si Xia from School of Public Finance and Taxation, ZUEL, gave a presentation entitled "Cross-sectoral tax-related information sharing, joint incentives and local tax growth".
In the keynote presentation, six professors explained the motivation of the study, introduction, institutional background, model setting and empirical strategy, empirical results, and research findings. Participating students and faculty members discussed in depth aspects of model setting, sample selection, empirical strategy and confounding factors interference. The forum had a lively atmosphere, where scholars and students collided with each other to create a strong academic exchange.
In conclusion, Associate Professor Tian Binbin made a brief summary speech on the exchange and outcomes of the forum and thanked the scholars once again for their support and presence. The 1st Xixian-Luoyu City Forum of Financial Studies came to a successful ending.
The Xixian-Luoyu City Forum of Financial Studies was initiated in the context of the "Double First Class University Plan" and the construction of the new liberal arts, to further promote exchanges between experts and scholars in the fields of finance, taxation and public economics in Wuhan, and to discuss important theoretical and practical issues in the field of finance. The next forum will be hosted by the Department of Finance and Taxation of Wuhan University. The forum will further promote the improvement of the discipline of finance and strive to become a model of Wuhan academic exchange platform in the field of finance.
