Abstract:
This paper examines the effect of human capital on urban development in the context of China's higher education expansion (HEE). We employ a generalized DID approach and find that HEE significantly increase the urban population. If the potential demand of higher skilled workers of a city is greater before HEE. the urban population of this city would increase more after HEE. We also find that HEE promotes city economic growth. The mechanism analysis shows that HEE increase the number of high skilled workers in cities and the newly-add high skilled workers attract low skilled workers because of skill complementary.
