Abstract:
The labour force participation rate of Chinese women is among the leading ones internationally, but the gender income gap still exists and the problem of uneven and insufficient development of women remains prominent. Using data from the 1995-2013 China Household Income Pool (CHIIP), this paper comprehensively examines the time-series evolution of the gender income gap and the impact of years of education, survival entrepreneurship and opportunity entrepreneurship on the gender income gap. Not only do we examine the gender income gap at the bottom, at the mean and at the top of the income scale, we also analyse the gender income gap within survey years and the change in the gender income gap between years. It was found that years of education had a stronger explanation of the gender gap at the mean and at the high-income quartile, and that opportunity-based entrepreneurship played a non-negligible role in explaining the gender gap at the high income quartile. This paper provides empirical evidence for promoting women's overall development and facilitating the convergence of the gender income gap.
