Professor Wang Hui from the Guanghua School of Management of Peking University, as the guest speaker of the forum, gave a keynote speech entitled “Leadership Behaviors and Leadership Patterns in the Chinese Enterprise Context”. The academic forum was hosted by Professor Ke Ling, the researcher of IIDPF, with the participation of Sun Qunli, the Deputy Director of IIDPF, Professor Liu Zhiqiang, the Vice Dean of the School of Management of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Professor Zhang Pengcheng, the Deputy Director of Personnel of HUST, Professor Zhao Chenhui from the School of Business Administration of ZUEL, Professor Zhao Jun from the School of Public Administration, and over thirty faculty members and students, including Professor Liu Erpeng, researcher Dr Zou Jianwen from IIDPF.
Traditional Confucian values, Chinese interpersonal communication and interaction styles and mindsets deeply influence leaders' management decisions. Based on several qualitative and quantitative studies, Professor Wang Hui explored the structure of top leadership behaviours and their impact on organisational performance in the Chinese context, summarised the mechanisms through which top leaders' humble and narcissistic personalities influence organisational innovation culture and performance, and explored the connotation, structure, measurement, and impact on organisational innovation capability of dialectical leadership behaviours. The study suggests that, firstly, top leaders of Chinese enterprises should uphold the triad model of conceptual shaping, humanistic integration and institutional norms. Secondly, top leaders should be like water in their personality and like mountains in their actions. Finally, top managers should grasp dialectical thinking, take precautions beforehand and be alert to dangers even in times of peace.
Professor Wang Hui gave a wonderful speech to the faculty and students present and at the same time triggered their in-depth thinking. In the discussion session, the attending faculty and students actively interacted regarding the research background, research questions and research methods.
